Thiakaba is a dance performed on wooden stilts tied to the legs with cord. The stilts can be
as much as 2.5 to 3 metres high but 2 metres is about the usual length to allow for the effect
of the wind and to minimise injury in the event of a fall. Thiakaba can also be performed on
one stilt. A stilt is tied to one leg only, leaving the other free. Great balance is needed to perform
Thiakaba. The loose costume, traditionally red, covers the stilts and a mask is worn to
cover the face of the performer.
